Drive to keep kids safe on the Net

Three organisations are teaming up in an effort to help parents protect their children from the dangers of technology.

Telecom, police and Net Safe are joining forces to ensure young people are aware of how to stay safe online, and through text messaging. Their pamphlet, Keeping Kiwi Kids Safer in Cyberspace is being distributed to schools.

Net Safe operations manager Lee Chisholm says kids are quick to pick up on the benefits of the internet, mobile phones and other devices but are often less concerned about the risks. She says parents have an important role to play by talking to their children.

Ms Chisholm says some youngster can end up neglecting family and friends, because they become too involved in their online world and the pamphlet helps parents deal with several online issues such as those.

She also says children might see things online such as material that confuses them or disturbs them, that could be inappropriate sexual content or other inappropriate content.

Telecom's head of security initiatives from home internet users, Kate Hoorler says if parents are aware of potential issues they can help their children explore and enjoy the internet to its best potential while also being mindful of how to keep them safe.
