A drive-by shooting carried out on a Christchurch home this morning was likely to be a targeted attack, police claim.
Police said a man and two teenagers were woken when a number of shots were fired into their garage at Hinemoa St in the suburb of Spreydon at 5:30am.
It is thought the shooting was carried out by occupants of a passing vehicle, though the type or calibre of the weapon is not known.
Detective senior sergeant Greg Murton says the shooting was likely meant to intimidate the family living at the house.
They had been left shaken by the incident, he said.
"I'd be surprised if they haven't driven round trying to send a message."
Mr Murton said police only had a vague description of the vehicle used by those who carried out the attack and were looking for information from the public to help track them down.
"It is unusual. This wouldn't happen many places in New Zealand, let alone Christchurch."
"Hopefully someone will be able to tell us - to give us information on who would have done it."
Members of the Christchurch South CIB were carrying out a full scene examination at the property this morning.
