KEY POINTS:
A drunk driver fleeing police soiled himself during the failed escape attempt.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Malcolm Lochrie said in the Napier District Court yesterday 24-year-old Kenneth Goodwin Johnson was seen driving in the city and hit speeds of more than 100km/h as he was chased by police.
The wheels of the car clipped a curb during the pursuit, causing two tyres to blow, but Johnson continued driving, with sparks flying from the rims until he was stopped.
Johnson later said he soiled himself because he got so excited about trying to get away from the police officers.
He recorded a breath- alcohol level of 1098mic in the incident in January 2006.
Johnson was later granted bail and released to appear in the Palmerston North District Court, but absconded, and disappeared from the police radar until last weekend when he was found riding a bicycle - drunk.
It was then that Johnson threatened to "take out" a police officer, Mr Lochrie said.
Johnson pleaded guilty to all five charges in court, and notching up his sixth conviction for drink-driving. He was also convicted of reckless driving, failing to stop for police, resisting arrest, and threatening behaviour.
He was sentenced to 12 months jail, and the judge remitted $4338 worth of fines.
