Drink- driver caught third time

A Carterton man was convicted in Masterton District Court yesterday on his third drink-driving charge.

Leon Shane Vincent Thompson, 35, was caught drink-driving in Masterton on February 19.

He was almost three times over the legal breath alcohol limit of 400mcg, blowing an alcohol reading of 1032 mcg of alcohol per litre of breath.

He also faced a charge of failing to stop for police.

Police prosecutor Garry Wilson said police pursued him but he accelerated away and when eventually stopped offered no explanation.

Judge Peter Butler said Thompson already had two drink-driving convictions.

"You've got a problem all right."

Thompson said he had started going to drug and alcohol counselling.

Judge Butler convicted Thompson, disqualified him from driving for 13 months and ordered him to pay a total of $980 in reparation and court costs.

He was convicted and discharged for the charge of failing to stop.
