KEY POINTS:
Almost a quarter of the drink-drivers caught in a North Shore sting at the weekend were teenagers.
The anti-drink-drive campaign, run by North Shore police and the specialist traffic alcohol group, caught 58 people driving with excess breath alcohol.
Senior Sergeant Rod Fraser said nearly 5000 vehicles were stopped during the operation, which began at 8pm on Friday and ended at 4 o'clock yesterday morning.
Of those who tested positive for excess breath alcohol, 13 were under the age of 20.
Mr Fraser said the timing of the operation was chosen specifically to coincide with the closing times of licensed premises on the North Shore and followed up on similar operations last year and earlier this year.
Several drivers returned breath-analyser readings of more than double the legal limit of 400 micrograms of alcohol per litre of breath.
Five vehicles were impounded and the licences of 100 drivers were suspended. Eight people were arrested for offences including dishonesty, drugs and warrants to arrest.
Mr Fraser said police would run further operations throughout the year targeting drink-drivers.
"If you drink and drive," he said, "there is a good chance you will be caught."
