A decorated police officer is on restricted duties after admitting he drove while more than 2 times over the legal alcohol limit.
Marsden Wayne McCarthy admitted driving with a breath alcohol level of 1,053mcg when he appeared in the Manukau District Court on Tuesday.
Judge Christopher Field fined McCarthy $850 and disqualified him from driving for seven months.
A Counties Manukau police spokeswoman said since he was charged, McCarthy had not dealt with investigations or the public. That would continue while an employment investigation took place.
McCarthy last year saved the life of a truck driver who had a heart attack.
