An alleged drunk driver fleeing from police was caught after crashing his car into a Mount Maunganui building this morning.
A 30-year-old man will be appearing in Tauranga District Court on June 20 facing charges of drink-driving, dangerous driving, failing to remain stopped for an enforcement officer and failing to stop.
Police said the man recorded a breath alcohol level of 924mcg of alcohol per litre of breath, more than twice the legal limit of 400mcg.
At about 3am this morning, police received a call from a member of public who was travelling behind an Audi car which was weaving across both lanes of Takitimu Drive, heading towards Mount Maunganui.
Police pulled the car over on the corner of Hewlett's Rd and Totara St but as an officer approached the front of the car, the driver fled north on Totara St, reaching speeds in excess of 130km/h.
