We are all told that good things do come to those who wait. For some that wait seems to take a lifetime, but for Jenny Wilkie this week was a dream. On behalf of the members at Martinborough we are delighted that you have finally made it into single digits. Further while we are on the subject of Jenny she also had a win on Friday against Masterton at Featherston in the Riverside Cup team- outstanding putting and continued her good form again on Monday against Royal Wellington at Wainuiomata in the Pennant Team with awesome drives!
Interclub
Riverside Cup on Friday against Masterton 3 ? to 2 ?, ground conditions was a good leveler and this was reflected in the adjusted scores. Pennants against Royal Wellington Green at Wainui, good wins to Jenny Wilkie and Gail Freeman and a handy half to Diana Donald for the silvers. Playing against Ohariu in the Bronzes, almost a clean sweep -Margaret Edwards, Gaye Didsbury, Dinee Creswell, Jenny Smith and Mary Desbonnets all had wins, well done to you.
Weekend
Saturday's stableford was depleted of Martinborough and Tuhirangi-Greytown rugby supporters who were all down at Hume Park for the big clash. The weather came right and some fresh faces ventured up to the course for a round without some regulars. 1st with a handy buffer was Richard Deans with 42 points, 2nd equal all on 39 points- Captain Kirk, Lyall Callaghan, Peter Bain, and Ash Reed, and two back with a respectable 37 points Handicapper Ian and Peter Warren.
There were 24 starters to Sundays Stableford Comp including our past Club Captain James Langley, who was playing in the distinguished company of Brian Moisley, Captain Kirk and Sherpa Trevor. The winners circle included a couple of these, but playing a solid round with the ace was Russell Swain with 43 points in first place, followed by our international visitor James Langley and Captain Kirk on 39 points and one back to the Ace Phelps, who also had the only two of the day. Easy putt on # 6 to take out the bird nest.
Wednesday Ladies
This subject came up the other day- Are we women or ladies? Wednesday ladies at Martinborough cover the spectrum. We have our invincible ladies June Hume and Molly Mc Gillicuddy, to the style chicks, immaculately dressed Wendy Cameron and Kirsty Icke. The rest of us are best described as the ladies in waiting.
This week's competition PAR MSB, those hugs and kisses. Rain distracted some people's play however playing superb golf 1st Jane Terpstra 2up, 2nd Margaret Edwards 1up. 3rd Gaye Didsbury All square. 4th equal on 1 down went to Sherry Weatherstone, Elisabeth Nicholls and Trish Donald.
All Teed up Nearest the Pin to the Writer, who was happy with the Par. No twos this week, but a pretty impressive eagle on the 2nd to Mariana Mc Dermott. Wow!
So excited about winning the nett I forgot the other half of the Wednesday results for April 26th. .
There was a good turn out for the Stableford Comp for those not silly enough to walk around the course twice. Having a super round 1st to one of the invincibles June Hume 34 points, and 2nd to one of the ladies in waiting- Adele Cairns with 33. Apologies ladies for lateness.
9 holers
Starting early a field of nineteen took advantage of the fine conditions for this weeks Hidden hole Comp.
1st Carol Parkinson with 43, 2nd Jo Wilson 44 and 3rd to Maureen Thurlow on 47.
Property Brokers Nearest the Pin on 16 going to one of their Agents- Susan Stephens. Well done.
Thursday Club
At the risk of becoming repetitive, Thursday stayed ideal for golfing all day, and some of the results showed that. Others were a little discombulate by the shifting of the 4th tee temporarily to the ladies. (Quelle horreur!)
Their must be some sort of advantage to being the green keeper's little helper, for Fred Murtin won the Pukemanu Trust Voucher for nearest the pin, but somehow, couldn't convert it into a two. 'This was achieved by three other players, Bill Jones, Roger Parkinson and Derek Stephens.
The new alignment of the course (there had to be a reason!) confused some of the players but Scottie Reid wasn't worried coming in with 45 stableford points, the day before he left on a holiday down south. May his golfing there be as good.
Matt Thomas kept up with 43 points, but then there was a little drop to Derek Stephens and David Thurlow with 40 points.
The excellent turnout meant that we were able to reward five players on 38 points: Lance Phelps, Stuart Taplin, Garth Edwards, David Kershaw and John Jacobson.
The shift to the new temporary tee has inspired the next tournament on the 18th when the whole contest will be off the ladies' tees. Because of this novelty event, we are inviting the ladies nine holers to join us so that, playing off the same tees, they can show us how it is done. As the saying has it, length doesn't mean a thing and clever use of the course will win every time.
Course landscape deconstruction
A big thank you to all of those wonderful aspiring arborists who assisted Darren with the removal of the tall shrubs aka Pinus Radiata and the other odd specimen that was earmarked for demolition. The clean up crew did a fantastic job.
Dream golfing week for Jenny Wilkie
