KEY POINTS:
The driver of a "hearse" carrying the body of a dead Mongrel Mob member and the drivers of two other cars in the procession are facing charges.
On Monday an 80-car tangi procession for "Fat" Jack Hillman deviated from an agreed route to Gisborne cemetery.
Inspector Waata Shepherd said police had stopped the private car carrying the casket to speak to the driver who then drove off with two other cars in the procession.
The cars were stopped by another police patrol.
The drivers of the three vehicles have been charged with dangerous driving and failing to stop.
Mr Shepherd said he had to "get out of the way" when the procession changed direction.
He would not describe what happened after as a "chase".
The three cars travelled only 200m before being stopped.
