Dramatic footage of 15-person Karangahape Rd brawl in Auckland released by police

Police have released footage of a dramatic, alcohol-fuelled brawl between more than 15 people that spilt on to Auckland's Karangahape Rd early Sunday morning, and left one man hospitalised.

The video shows passers-by being forced to take evasive action as the fighting moves into the middle of an intersection, into the path of oncoming traffic.

One of the brawls ends up taking place on the bonnet of a car waiting at the lights.

A 22-year-old was charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and a 21-year-old was charged with assault with intent to Injure. Both will appear in court today.

Police made fourteen arrests in restoring order in the location, mainly for disorderly behaviour.

They are seeking witnesses to the serious assault which took place at about 2.30am.

Video footage shows a large group of more than 15 lining the side of K Rd and fighting.

Police say the footage shows "just some" of the chaotic scenes they had to deal with in the early hours of Sunday morning.

They are now trying to identify the people in the video and are not ruling out further charges, as investigations continue.

Half an hour after the fight on K Rd, another fight broke out nearby in East St, in which a man, now in hospital, sustained his injuries.

The 23-year-old victim was knocked unconscious and received significant facial and head injuries.

He was taken to hospital in a serious but stable condition.

"It's hugely frustrating and disappointing to see violence like this in our city at night. This was violence fuelled by alcohol and people who can't handle their drink " Inspector Mark Benefield said.

"It only takes one punch and someone falls, knocks their head and dies.

"How many families would that affect? These brawlers are just one moment away from changing people's lives forever. Not only that, but spare a thought for the innocent people who are going about their business along K Rd; the motorist waiting at the lights who finds the bonnet of their car being used as a boxing ring. It's extremely frightening and law-abiding people shouldn't have to deal with it," Benefield said.

Police will continue to patrol "city party hot spots" as the warmer weather approaches, and will be taking a very low-tolerance approach to similar behaviour.

"We fully expect more people to come into the city at night as the party season approaches and we will be coming down hard on those who do behave badly whilst under the influence," Benefield said.

Police will be asking bar owners and managers to be extra vigilant with patrons in meeting their responsibilities under the Sale and Supply of Alcohol Act 2012.

"Auckland is a fantastic city to enjoy at this time of the year but it's unacceptable that this level of violence occurs when people want to come into the city to enjoy themselves."

Benefield reminded people coming into the CBD that the entire area has a 24-hour alcohol ban which police will enforce with $250 fines or arrest.

Police would like to speak to anyone who was in the area at the time of the brawl and may have seen the incident.
