Louis Vuitton Cup racing may be only days away, but international yachting cuts little ice when it comes to laying drains.
Sailors building up to the America's Cup Challengers Series have had to dodge roadworks all week as contractors lay a stormwater drain outside their Halsey St bases.
The large concrete obstructions are all in the cause of connecting a drain to new apartments being built. Construction work there has left a section of the footpath closed for weeks.
Weather permitting, contractors Bassett Plumbing and Drainage hope to have everything shipshape by September 18.
But there are no America's Cup-friendly guarantees preventing further excavations.
Auckland City Council service delivery manager Chris Gasson said the council could not ban work during the regatta.
Once private developers were issued with road-opening licences the council could impose only limited conditions, to stop the entire road from being blocked or ensure traffic management was in place.
Mr Gasson said the council had imposed a works ban on itself during the cup and was working with utilities in an attempt to create a roadwork-free period.
The area should be more settled than during the last event as many of the developments were completed.
