KEY POINTS:
The world's fastest rotary-powered drag machines roared in a preview parade on Queen St yesterday, capturing the attention of drivers and pedestrians.
Australian Pac Performance Mazda MX6 and McKern Racing Mazda RX-2 were among the 35 New Zealand modified cars on parade. Also deemed the world's loudest drag cars, the MX6 and RX-2 will show how fast they roll on Sunday at Meremere along with 300 other competitors.
It has been a decade since Australian Pac Performance drag race cars last took to the strip at the 4&Rotary Nationals and this time they are getting more serious.
"The guys are looking forward to making NZ import drag racing history as the first ever rotary-powered car to break the 6-second barrier on Kiwi soil," event manager Azhar Bhamji said.
Besides letting the public have a glimpse of the Sunday event, the parade is also aimed at promoting safe and responsible driving, which is approved by both Manukau and Auckland City Council.
This is in line with the Manukau City Council's "road is no race track" campaign, which is held annually.
On Saturday, 250 modified cars will be exhibited at the ASB Showgrounds in Greenlane.
