Dr Greg Sherley, from Paraparaumu, has become a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to conservation.
The New Year Honours accolade came as a surprise.
He said it was rare for someone working in the environment sector to get recognition like this so it was “a real compliment to realise the wider community is placing worth/value to conservation work both in New Zealand and in the wider Pacific”.
His passion for conservation started from a young age when he roamed, without restriction, the outdoors of New Zealand bird watching, fishing and hunting.
“During my teenage years the issue of logging native forests was at its peak which helped focus my professional aspirations to protect native biodiversity.”
