KEY POINTS:
A Waikato man accused of double murder has taken the stand in his own defence in the High Court at Rotorua late this morning.
Jason Reihana, 35, is on trial for the fatal stabbing in Tauranga of his former partner Teresa Gunn and her new boyfriend Andrew Grabner on December 11, 2005.
Defence lawyer Paul Mabey QC told the jury of six men and six women that Reihana had intended to kill himself, not anyone else.
He was provoked after finding Ms Gunn and Mr Grabner in bed together and lost control.
Mr Mabey asked the jury to consider a verdict of manslaughter rather than murder.
"I am not saying to you let this man go free. I would never say that."
