The strike power of Wairarapa United in the 2008 Capital premier division men's soccer competition has been boosted with the arrival of Vanuatu and Fiji international Seule Soromon.
The 23-year-old demonstrated his goal scoring prowess at the latest South Pacific Games where he won the golden boot award after netting 11 times for third placed Vanuatu in a series of World Cup qualifying matches.
Soromon has also been playing for Suva in Fiji's national league and was part of the Fijian squad which met New Zealand in further World Cup qualifying games late last year.
Fiji came off second best in those particular matches but Soromon had previously tasted success over New Zealand as a member of the Vanuatu side which caused a stunning upset when they eliminated the All Whites from World Cup contention four years ago.
Wairarapa United coach Phil Keinzley is excited at the prospect of Soromon partnering fellow Fiji international Pita Rabo in the striker's role.
"He is very quick and very skilful," Keinzley said of Soromon.
"He's every bit as goal hungry as Pita is, they should be lethal together."
The South Pacific influence in the Wairarapa United squad will be strengthened again tonight when another notable recruit in Waisake Subutu arrives here.
Subutu, 28, has been signed as a utility player, hardly surprising when you consider he captains and plays striker for Fiji's champion club side Va'a in their national league and took out the golden boot award for scoring the most goals there.
On the international front, however, he plays for Fiji as a central midfielder and his preferred position is actually central fullback.
At 6ft 8ins his height should certainly be a plus in the defensive area.
The Wairarapa United premier division squad will have their first official training run for 2008 next Monday with Keinzley delighted at the fact that all players involved in that side will actually be resident in the Wairarapa.
"When you have players coming in from outside it does create difficulties with training and it's good to know that won't be a problem this time round," he said.
