KEY POINTS:
The weekend road toll has risen to three following a double fatality south of Auckland this afternoon.
The crash between a car and a motorcycle happened at the intersection of Clevedon and Kawakawa roads in the rural settlement of Clevedon, 40km southeast of central Auckland.
Inspector Turepu Keenan, of the police northern communications centre, said the driver of the car and the motorcycle rider both died in the crash. A passenger in the car was injured.
Mr Keenan said the road around the crash scene was closed. Diversions had been placed at the bridge just after the Clevedon roundabout and at Kawakawa Bay.
Significant delays are expected and traffic, apart from Clevedon residents, will have to go south through Kaiaua to State Highway 2.
The weekend's other fatal crash was also on the southern outskirts of Auckland. One person died and two others were taken to hospital following the crash about 6.15pm on Friday at the intersection of Pollock and Domain roads, in Pukekohe.
The deceased was a 27-year-old woman. Her name is yet to be released.
