Two major trophies will be at stake when the Wairarapa College and St Matthew's Collegiate first XI girls hockey teams do battle in a 6.15pm match at Clareville on Friday night.
The successful side will take away the traditional trophy played for between the two sides, the Dunce Cup, and will also be crowned Wellington secondary schoolgirls premier division competition winners for 2011.
That a cliff-hanger of a game is in prospect is evidenced by the results of the four clashes between the two sides already this season. There has been a win apiece and two draws.
Of those matches the last of them was the most important as it came in the semifinals of the Federation Cup national tournament in Auckland, Wairarapa College winning 2-1 and going on to beat defending champions Diocesan School of Auckland in the grand final by the same scoreline. St Matthew's - who placed third overall - and Diocesan had drawn 0-0 in earlier pool play.
Not only will Friday's match therefore feature two of the top three secondary schoolgirls sides in the country but it will also see several leading under-21 players in New Zealand in action.
