A pod of bottlenose dolphins have been captured cavorting around Takapuna beach this week.
The pod of about 10 to 14, including at least two calves, lived along the east coast between Auckland and Whangarei, and were spotted "fairly regularly" along the stretch of coast, Department of Conservation marine technical advisor Clinton Duffy said.
The pod looked like they were feeding, he said.
"I'd say there's a bit of feeding going on, the way they're all circling around in quite a tight bunch and the jumping could be to help concentrate fish or chase fish towards other dolphins."
He had seen some of the dolphins from the pod playing with children close to the coastline in the past.
