A Nelson man bought a dog and had it put down to stop his own pet being destroyed, the Nelson District Court has been told.
Kevin Riley Plant, 25, admitted charges of owning a dog that attacked a person, obtaining a dog by deception and fabricating evidence.
Police prosecutor Sergeant Wayne Johnston said that when a police constable went to Plant's house on August 2, a dog bit his left leg. On August 19, Plant was told that the dog he owned must be put down.
Mr Johnston said Plant then took a puppy he had obtained through a newspaper advertisement to a veterinarian and had it put down.
Plant was remanded Plant on bail until February 22.
