Dog destroyed after Gisborne attack

A Gisborne woman who was hospitalised for a week after a dog attack has welcomed the dog's destruction today.

The 39-year-old was attacked in Parau Street in the Gisborne suburb of Kaiti on January 30, and suffered wounds to her face, neck and arm.

She required surgery and spent seven days in Gisborne Hospital.

The two-year-old great dane/bull mastiff cross was put down this morning after a meeting with its owners., Gisborne District Council said.

No further action would be taken against the owners, council environment and planning manager Hans van Kregten said.

It was the third dog attack in a week after a five-year-old girl suffered serious facial injuries after being mauled by two bulldog-pitbull cross dogs in Taneatua, near Whakatane, when visiting a neighbour with her father, and a three-year-old girl almost lost an eye when attacked by a pitbull in Wairoa, Hawke's Bay

In another dog attack on February 5, a Tauranga man was mauled by his two dogs at his Hairini home, receiving serious head and arm injuries.

Ambulance officers found him badly hurt and called police, who shot the dogs dead.
