A 2-year-old boy bitten by an unregistered staffordshire bull terrier on Monday was released from the Starship hospital yesterday.
Auckland City Council said the boy had been poking the dog in the face with a stick at a Westmere property.
An official said the dog was owned by members of the toddler's extended family. It will be destroyed this morning.
A decision on whether to prosecute the owner will be made once an investigation is completed.
