Wellington City Council is looking at a business case for bringing giant pandas from China to Wellington Zoo, but one councillor opposed to the project believes the proposal could cost up to $100 million.
Prime Minister John Key, who has been promoting the idea since a 2010 visit to China, said he believed the cost would be less than that, but would still be considerable.
"The Government would make some contribution, but not necessarily massive," Mr Key said. "I don't know how much support, and the process is long and slow."
Kiwi could be sent to China if it helped a New Zealand zoo secure giant pandas.
