Not even two fine knocks by promising youngster Andy Dodd could stop Rathkeale College from outright defeat at the hands of Red Star in their Wairarapa Bidwell Cup senior men's interclub cricket match at Rathkeale on Saturday.
The students were always going to be on the back foot after Stars declared their first innings closed at a massive 312-7 and after they were all out for just 95 in their own first "dig" it was pretty much a case of what Stars would win by.
In the end it was an innings and 50 runs but not before Dodd, a Central Districts age-group representative, had shown typical grit in scoring 40 in the first innings and 72 in the second
The main wicket-takers in Rathkeale's first innings were Carwyn Caffell with 3-23 and Aaron Wilson with 3-18 but it was Peter Sigvertsen who did most of the damage in their second innings, finishing with 5-34.
There was a frustrating end to the Lansdowne v Academy match at the Park Oval with Saturday's play being abandoned without a ball being bowled because of a damp wicket. Apparently it was not covered on Friday night and the heavy rain experienced then took its toll.
The game ended in a draw after Lansdowne had scored 152 in their first innings and Academy were 123-8 in reply.
