KEY POINTS:
Historic sex charges including the rape of a young girl more than 20 years ago will be defended by an Auckland doctor.
The 58-year-old doctor, who is not allowed to practise, appeared in a brief depositions hearing in the Auckland District Court.
After pleading not guilty to the rape charge, one of attempted rape, two of indecent assault and one of inducing a young girl to do an indecent act on him, he was committed for trial in the High Court.
All the alleged victims were aged 8 or under and the offences were all alleged to have been committed in a small settlement on the Coromandel Peninsula.
Phil Hamlin, who appeared for the police, said 10 witnesses would be called. The man was remanded on bail to appear at a callover next month. His bail conditions included a weekly reporting clause and an order not to associate with the complainants or the witnesses.
His name suppression would continue until the beginning of his trial.
