GP Stephanie Meyer performed a one-woman show yesterday when she delivered her own son on the side of a road in Palmerston North.
After suffering intense contractions, the part-time doctor went into labour on the five minute drive to hospital and was forced to deliver the baby herself, The Manawatu Standard reported.
Dr Meyer's husband, Nathan, was driving her to Palmerston North Hospital when she told him it was too late.
"I said, `You have to pull over. I think I'm crowning and I'm happy to have this baby by the side of the road'," she said.
"Next thing I just scooped him (the baby) up on my tummy in the front seat."
Mr Meyer watched while his wife took charge, helping her to loosen the umbilical cord from their son's neck before returning to the driver's seat.
"It was a bit of a high-speed delivery, not what we were anticipating but he didn't want to wait," he said.
Weighing 3.9kg, their son entered the world about 8.05am on a deserted Fitzroy Street in a Honda CRV, on loan from his aunt who was looking after the couple's other son, 18-month-old Caleb.
