A group representing private campsite owners has welcomed the Department of Conservation's plan to create new camping grounds on public land.
Holiday Accommodation Parks Association chief Fergus Brown said he was concerned several campsites had closed recently.
There had been increased demand from New Zealanders and international visitors to stay in camping grounds.
"We have to make sure that experience is available," he said.
