It will be do-or-die for Giants when they meet Kapiti in an Inter-City series top six men's softball match at South Park, Masterton tomorrow.
Giants need to beat Kapiti in this particular game and then Cardinals next Saturday to earn a semi-finals berth and coach Tony Nixon says they will be leaving no stone unturned in their endeavours to achieve that objective.
"There's no ifs or buts, we have to win the next two games to stay alive, "Nixon said. "It's a big ask against quality opposition but we can do it."
Frustratingly Giants have lost all three of their top six Inter-City series matches to date by just the one run, the last of them to Hutt City on a tiebreaker. Nixon concedes a record of that nature might give the impression Giants were "choking" when the pressure went on but he said appearances were deceiving in that respect.
"Each time we have battled hard all the way through but in the end haven't been quite good enough to get home," he said. "There's been nothing majorly wrong about the way we have played, nothing at all."
Nixon expects Kapiti to pose a formidable threat to Giants what with the reliable Sean Jamieson doing the pitching and a couple of American "imports" enhancing their batting line-up.
"They (Kapiti) beat us the only other time we have played this season so we certainly won't be taking anything for granted," he said. "There's every chance we will be going right down to the wire again, only this time we are going to win!"
The current Inter-City top six points table is (in order of games played, games won, games lost, runs for, runs against, total points): Miramar 4, 4, 0, 11, 3, 8; Porirua City United 2, 2, 0, 11, 8, 4; Hutt City United 4, 2, 2, 16, 11, 4; Cardinals 3, 1, 2, 9, 12, 2; Giants 3, 0, 3, 7, 10, 0; Kapiti 2, 0, 2, 1, 11, 0.
