The killing of 14 endangered weka by a dog on Kawau Island has prompted the Department of Conservation to introduce DNA testing.
An island resident was found guilty of being the owner of the dog at a jury trial in the Auckland District Court this week.
Biodiversity programme manager, Rory Renwick, said the testing will allow staff to collect DNA from the bite mark on an injured or dead animal and determine the breed of dog which attacked it.
Mr Renwick said this sends a strong message that DOC will prosecute dog owners who let them roam on conservation land.
