Employers are changing the way they run Christmas parties to cater for more diverse workplaces, including an increase in migrant workers such as Muslims who don't eat ham or drink alcohol.
Instead, corporate versions of The Amazing Race, cooking classes and family events such as picnics in the park are becoming increasingly popular as organisations try to include all staff in end-of-year functions.
Equal Employment Opportunities Trust chief executive Bev Cassidy-Mackenzie said companies were thinking more about what was appropriate for everyone because some traditional practices were outdated.
"Gone are the days of giving everyone a ham for Christmas as it's just not appropriate any more. You just can't give everyone a ham and think it's okay. If you've got Muslims in your workforce it's offensive to give them a ham. It's not okay."
