A Rotorua swimmer, who has represented New Zealand, was offered diversion when he appeared in Auckland District Court today charged with causing damage to a Rotorua hostel.
Kane Rae Francis Radford, 19, faced one charge of wilful damage for damaging a sign at the Rotorua Base Hostel on July 2.
He was remanded at large to reappear in court on November 5 when the charge will be dismissed, should he meet the conditions of his diversion.
Radford, a student who now lives in Auckland, won the prestigious Tiburon Mile open water event in San Francisco last September and the Sovereign Ocean Swim Series Harbour Crossing and King of the Bays events in 2008.
