Navy divers using sophisticated sonar equipment have begun an attempt to find the body of teenage boy presumed dead after a jetski accident on a lake near Rotorua at the weekend.
The navy was called in after police divers yesterday unsuccessfully searched Lake Okareka for 17-year-old Rotorua High School pupil Bishop Thompson.
Search teams and police divers were joined by navy divers from about 7am while family members prepared for another day of waiting. They have kept up a non-stop vigil on the lake's shoreline since Bishop's disappearance.
"The object is to find Bishop today. The Navy are assisting us this morning in our continued search on the lake. We are utilising sonar equipment, navy and police divers in the ongoing search," Bay of Plenty Police District Operations Manager Inspector Scott Fraser said at the boat ramp this morning.
Just after 9am Navy divers set off to the search location while a large group of family and supporters lined the edge of the lake.
