The police dive squad will today search a Central Otago lake for the body of a Southland fisherman.
The man was fishing on Lake Onslow, 37km east of Roxburgh, with another adult about 2pm when he entered the water to untangle fishing lines caught in the boat's propellers.
"The breeze has caused the boat and the fisherman to drift apart and the adult remaining on the boat has been unable to restart the motors to rescue the fisherman in the water," Mr Shaw said.
"By the time the boat reached the shore and the motors were restarted the fisherman had disappeared."
Senior Sergeant Brian Benn said this morning a dive squad would search the lake.
"Obviously by now we're looking at a body recovery by the dive squad," he said.
The name of the man, who was not wearing a life-jacket, has not been released.
