KEY POINTS:
A woman has been flown to hospital after a diving mishap in Gore Bay, north of Picton.
Westpac Rescue chopper crewman, Dave Greenberg, said the 49-year-old woman got into trouble on the way down to the sunken Mikhail Lermontov cruise ship, and was helped back up by her diving buddy.
Off-duty harbourmaster David Baker added that he understood the woman had surfaced unconscious.
"I assume it was the bends. It's not a good thing to happen at those depths," he said.
Wellington's Westpac rescue helicopter was flown to the remote bay and the diver was resuscitated at the scene before being airlifted to hospital.
Her condition was not immediately known.
She may have to be transported from Wellington to Christchurch where there is a compression chamber.
