The family of the young Malaysian man who drowned during a diving assessment has been awarded $151,000, to be paid by the diving company. New Zealand School of Commercial Diver Training, part of the Intueri Education Group, was ordered to pay $125,000 in reparation to the family and $26,000 towards their costs, as well as a $54,000 fine, in yesterday's judgment.
Luqmanulhakim Bin Moien, 23, from Malaysia, died at Lake Puketirini, the school's training facility, near Huntly, on April 28, 2014.
He was found in cold, zero-visibility water at the lake.
The Auckland-based company pleaded guilty to one charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act in October last year.
Eldest brother Ikrar Moien told the Herald it wasn't about the money for his family. "All we need is an explanation and a remorse from the CEO, the person in charge of the training and the school ... the money cannot bring back my brother alive but the money will be used for what he had promised to my family before the tragedy."
