Disused station has new owner

The historic Greytown railway station building, plus the land it is sitting on, has a new owner.

Property Brokers rural and lifestyle sales consultant David Montgomerie confirmed it had been sold but was unable to reveal more about the buyer, or what would happen to the building, until the settlement.

Built in 1880, the station serviced the Greytown branch line to and from Greytown and Woodside until it was closed down in the mid-1950s.

It was then shifted to Woodside to become a goods shed.

At the end of last year the Crown declared it surplus to railways requirements and instructed Property Brokers to tender the 2.2-hectare property on the open market.

While it has no official protection status with Heritage NZ or under the Wairarapa Combined District Plan, there was a call from the Greytown Heritage Trust to preserve the building. Trust secretary, Frank Minehan had said the building could be moved.

Mr Montgomerie said the buyer had indicated the building may be made available for heritage conservation purposes.
