Adrian Roche was forced to flee from his bath when fire broke out at a house in Grey Lynn, Auckland, last night.
Mr Roche said he was alerted by the sound of breaking glass and the smoke alarm.
"I bolted outside into the back yard with a towel round me."
The blaze started in the front part of the century-old wooden villa in Sackville St. Firefighters managed to stop the flames from spreading through the rest of the house and to a nearby home.
Mr Roche said that luckily, his three flatmates were out, but one of the bedrooms was damaged.
The property owner lives overseas.
