A new Centre for Disaster Research will enhance the country's ability to predict and respond to natural disasters, Research, Science and Technology Minister Steve Maharey says.
The centre, established through a partnership between Massey University and the Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences, was launched yesterday.
Mr Maharey said it brought together experts from a range of disciplines, including geologists, psychologists, risk assessors and economists.
One of its tasks will be to analyse the psychological impact of natural hazards, and it will be centred at the university's School of Psychology.
