The course
A robust computer network is the backbone of any organisation, requiring technicians with the ability to design, build and manage computer networks.
The computer and network specialisation at Manukau Institute of Technology is a standard qualification for technicians wishing to specialise in network engineering. It has a strong practical focus with students spending a third to a half their time in computer laboratories doing hands-on practical exercises working with the hardware. Students spend 25 hours a week in lectures and tutorials. Technical writing is part of the course to prepare students for writing industry technical reports.
Students are also expected to spend another 25 hours of self-directed learning; usually in the department's computer labs.
The course is one of four specialisations within the diploma of electrical and computer engineering.
Training in the use of CISCO computer networking equipment is embedded into the programme adding value for students who can graduate with a CISCO certification as well as the MIT diploma. This offers MIT graduates an advantage in the workplace because CISCO is commonly used in New Zealand by many companies, including Telecom.
The level-six course is a two-year, full-time course with part time options. Approximately 100 students enter each year; some enrolling in July.
Applicants need at least 12 credits in each of three subjects (36 credits) at NCEA level two, including a least eight credits in level two maths. A bridging maths course is sometimes offered to students that don't meet the maths criteria.
People over 20 are accepted on the basis of their maturity, work experience and evidence of interest in computers. A keen interest is highly desirable, whether someone tinkering with their home computer or working in related jobs. Graduates gain jobs in computer networking, installation, preventative maintenance, product testing, quality assurance or assembly line management. Some students transition into the degree in engineering technology.
The graduate
Fergus Stanton
Network manager at Macleans College
Graduated 2005
My job involves managing the network at Macleans College which has 20 servers and over 600 computers. I work with my manager to make sure communications are working throughout the school, specifically IT based communications such as computers and laptops.
This includes setting up new services, managing and maintaining server operations and upgrading and implementing new technology, such as new curriculum software. The demand and reliance on the network is growing all the time.
I've worked at the college since October 2003. I was studying the diploma full time, then went part time so I could start working here.
The diploma is hands on and gave me a thorough knowledge of running a network. It was particularly attractive to me because of the CISCO qualifications. CISCO is a world leader in networking products. To get the CISCO qualification, you sit external CISCO exams. I've got my network associate certificate. I've also done the papers for the next level up, but not sat the CISCO exam yet.
The employer
Dieta Rass
IT services manager at Macleans College
When the school decided it needed to expand beyond a basic network to provide more software and support to staff we employed more staff, including Fergus.
His job offers a broad range of work and responsibility and he does a fantastic job at it.
To be able to resolve computer problems you need to be very precise and particular. Fergus has those qualities. He is also patient and polite with staff, helping them learn how to use the network properly.
He is CISCO certified which is a highly sought after qualification and one that is hard to get hold of in a school environment. He would have no trouble finding work elsewhere but he seems to be committed to education which is good for us.
I'm convinced the course helped him further develop those skills so I would recommend the MIT qualification to anyone wanting to get into networking.
