The course
The diploma in computing: technical support and services is nationally recognised through the Qualifications Framework, and next year will cost $13,650.
The next intake starts at the institute's Takapuna campus in January, and at the Botany Downs campus in February.
The diploma prepares students to become IT professionals, learning a full range of computer support skills from network administration to computer repairs, and evaluating software to teaching other people to use new software.
"They learn about the ethics and professional codes of conduct within the industry, good communication skills and report writing, so they can secure good jobs in the industry," says Takapuna campus manager Mike Hull.
"Students will also rebuild a computer during the technician portion of this programme."
Applicants for this one-year, full-time (40-week) diploma programme must be 20 years old and are required to have at least one year of computing study at tertiary level with a satisfactory pass mark, or at least three years of proven experience in a related field.
Students for whom English is a second language also need to have English IELTS 6.0 or the Institute Eligibility Test, with a mark of at least 65 per cent. The ability to research topics and prepare written reports is also essential, says Hull.
With computer support and services becoming fast-growing areas, Hull expects continually strong demand for graduates.
After graduating, they are likely to move into positions such as dedicated computer support staff in medium to large companies, self-employed computer support people with a range of clients, and computer support personnel to support computer sales and after-sales servicing.
What past students think
Manish Laxman
24, systems admin support
NZ Institute of Education, Auckland
Graduated 2001
"I enrolled in this course because I felt something was missing from my knowledge. Despite completing a bachelor of business management, majoring in information systems and accounting, I lacked practical hardware skills.
"The diploma was great. As soon as I started I knew I had made the right choice. My lecturer was great, and he had enormous experience in the IT industry. Through the passing of his knowledge and teaching methods I gained excellent skills in the IT support arena.
"After completing the course, I gained a job with the institute, working in systems administration support for the Botany Downs and Epsom campuses."
What employers think
Mike Hull, campus manager, Takapuna, Auckland
"Manish came to us with a lot of academic theory and knowledge. What he graduated with was real hands-on computer IT skills.
"We were so impressed with the way he applied the theory with the hands-on stuff, we employed him on graduation.
"The course, together with current job, are providing him with a career path allowing him to immediately apply new skills in a practical IT environment.
"It's a great foundation for students to go into a career pathway."
