A digger in the water has baffled Kapiti Coast locals.
Police were called to Paraparaumu Beach early this morning after the digger was spotted in the sea with its cab nearly completely submerged.
It was not clear how the digger got there.
Police passed the recovery operation on to the Kapiti Coast District Council.
The vehicle belongs to a council contractor who had been doing some work at the beach following the recent stormy seas, including putting in a row of concrete blocks to protect a sewer line.
