KEY POINTS:
The army is stationing 24-hour guards in front of Gisborne's army recruitment centre after a 40-year-old man allegedly attacked the building with a digger and demolished part of it.
Police say he had earlier called a hire company and asked for the digger to be dropped off in front of the Palmerston Road building.
They say the man drove to the Gisborne police to surrender afterwards.
An army spokeswoman says the incident has damaged the security at the building and affected communications into and out of it.
There is no word yet on what the damage will cost.
Army and police investigations into the motive for the attack are underway.
