Traffic is gridlocked in Wellington's Upper Hutt, after a digger rolled off a truck and on to the road.
The NZ Transport Agency said there were now "significant delays" on State Highway 2 near Fergusson Dr.
A crane is needed to remove the digger, leaving access to Fergusson Dr from
SH2 closed, and the left southbound lane closed.
Cars are being stopped at five-minute intervals while the digger removal takes place.
It's expected to be several hours before things are back to normal and all lanes fully reopen.
