One of the men charged with the murder of Wan Biao discussed different ways of disposing of his body, a jury at the High Court in Auckland has heard.
Li Zheng, Cui Xiangxin and Wang Yuxi are charged with the kidnap and murder of Mr Wan in April last year.
His body was found in a suitcase in Auckland harbour.
Yin Lianda was orginally charged with being an accessory to murder but has been granted immunity from prosecution provided he testified for the crown.
Speaking through an interpreter, Mr Yin today told the court how Li told him about the plans to kidnap and murder Mr Wan.
Mr Yin knew Li and Wang from their days in middle school in China in 1998 and met Cui in New Zealand in 2004.
Li told Yin he planned to dispose of Mr Wan's body by throwing it in the sea or setting an apartment on fire, the court heard.
The apartment would be used for the kidnapping, he said.
"At the time what he told me was scary," he told the court.
He said Li also told him he wanted Wang to buy syringes and rubber gloves, to be used for the kidnapping, while he was on holiday in China.
He said he saw the items when Wang returned to New Zealand.
Mr Yin said a few weeks before the murder, he saw Li taping Cui to a chair to practice tying someone up.
Mr Yin said he told Li he did not want to be involved in any kidnapping or murder.
Li told him there were plans to kill another person as well as Mr Wan and when asked why it was necessary, Li replied there was no other way, he said.
Mr Yin said the most of the conversations about the planned kidnap and murder almost always took place at an apartment Li, Wang and Mr Yin shared in Hobson Street, downtown Auckland.
