The Department of Conservation is worried about the discovery of the invasive algae didymo in the Cobb River in Kahurangi National Park. The department is concerned didymo could spread to more rivers in the park and affect endangered native whio/blue ducks.
Didymo cells had been found during a DoC survey of the Cobb River near Trilobite Hut in Golden Bay.
DoC says it will carry out further sampling to determine how far the algae had spread.DOC acting Golden Bay area manager Hans Stoffregen said the find was "very disappointing".
