KEY POINTS:
Staff at Wellington's Karori Wildlife Sanctuary have had to reinforce nesting boxes after doors on them were destroyed by Kaka.
Sanctuary conservation officer Matt Robertson said a group of the large parrots had used their beaks to pull solid wooden doors off many of the 43 boxes set up for nesting and then damaged them further once on the ground.
He said the juvenile birds were curious and destructive when it came to man-made objects and were likely to have enjoyed the challenge of trying to wreck the doors.
Staff at the sanctuary had to respond by screwing the doors on rather then relying on the slide system they were originally set up with.
