Nelson's Destiny Church is offering both fuel for the soul and fuel for the car.
Pastor Martin Daly told the Nelson Mail his assistant pastor, Jodee Millman, heard of a church in the United States offering a fuel draw and decided to try it here.
The church is offering a weekly prize draw of $50 worth of fuel to attract worshippers.
So far it has been running six weeks, and winners have included a solo mother and some seasonal workers from Vanuatu.
The church would keep the offer going as long it was popular, he said.
The draw was open only to newcomers who filled out an entry form with their contact details.
