The task of creating a logo for the Super City has thrown up lots of Rangitotos, Sky Towers and Harbour Bridges, plus the letter 'A'.
But the head of the judging panel, Waitakere Mayor Bob Harvey, said the judges were not looking for a destination logo to brand a new era in Auckland.
A public design competition has attracted between 1300 and 1500 entries, which will be whittled down to about 20 for the panel to select a winner.
Mr Harvey said none of the entries would be made public, saying that would only create a tortuous process where everyone wanted to be a judge and no one would agree.
He was confident the judges would come up with a very good logo:
"People will like it and if they don't like it, believe me, it will grow on them," he said.
If the panel could not find something "absolutely right", he said it would be over to the Auckland Transition Agency, which set up the competition, to provide a logo.
Mr Harvey, who has 30 years' experience in advertising, is joined on the judging panel by art consultant Hamish Keith, artist Dick Frizzell, designer Karen Walker, broadcaster Bill Ralston, Pacific artist and curator Ema Tavola, and Wayne Pihema, who sits on the Aotea Centre board of management.
