The interior design of Wellington's NZX building and a book that describes a model for Maori sustainable development and were among the winners of design awards presented in Auckland last night.
The Designers' Institute of New Zealand's 2006 BeST Awards were announced at the Aotea Centre.
The awards, which have been running since 1988, are judged in three disciplines: product, spatial (interiors) and graphics. This year there were 535 entries.
Tim Hooson, of Jasmax, Auckland, won the Stringer in Spatial Design for the NZ Stock Exchange Centre in the refurbished Odlins Building in Cable St, Wellington.
The Stringer winner for Graphics went to a book called Let's Settle This, produced by Design Works Enterprise IG, of Wellington and designed by Sven Baker. It focuses on sustainability, with a long-term vision of Maori economic self-sufficiency.
Andrew Bissett, of Formworks Product Design, won the Best of Category, consumer product, for his multi-function marine display unit for Navman.
The Best of Category, non-consumer, was won by Tony Parker, of Massey University, for his Solar Electric Fence Energizer designed for Gallagher Management Systems.
Other Best of Category winners included architect Malcolm Taylor's Princes Wharf Apartment Refurbishment, Conscious Design's Tio Chair and Alt Group's Tranoi Fashion Week lookbook.
