Pictured: Herb Christophers and his wife, Marguerite, at Queens Wharf yesterday before they joined the liner Queen Elizabeth for its journey to Gallipoli. Beside them is a special "poppy wall" marking the centenary of the Anzac landings.
Mr Christophers was invited to sail as Cunard's guest on the Anzac voyage, which will take in Asia and the Gulf before sailing through the Suez Canal and up to Gallipoli in Turkey.
He will write a blog about the trip and visit the grave of his great-uncle Victor Christophers, who is buried on the headland's North Beach.
The invitation to join the trip came after Cunard's tour organisers were alerted to the story of Mr Christophers' Southland grandfather, Reginald Christophers, and three of his brothers, who all lost their lives in World War I.
The account features in a book called Poppy Boys by Invercargill writer Lynley Dear.
