A derelict building in Auckland’s Point Chevalier has been destroyed following a large fire.
Fire and Emergency services received multiple calls reporting a building fire near Great North Rd, Point Chevalier, just before midnight.
Fire and Emergency senior station officer Steven Bolton said they initially responded with three fire pumps and an appliance from Te Atatū.
“Upon arrival, we found a building that was well involved in fire, which drew a second alarm, which pulled more resources from the inner city districts, from city fire station and Parnell, including a heavy aerial and a hazmat unit from Ōtara.”
After determining what was on fire, crews took a “defensive tactical mode for extinguishing the fire”, Bolton said.
Firefighters were able to rapidly contain the fire and prevent its spread to surrounding buildings.
The derelict property is just in front of a major new supermarket development being built in the suburb.
“No reports indicated that anyone was inside the building, and as crews work to extinguish the fire they are ensuring that there is no one inside.
The cause was “undetermined” at this time.
“We do have a specialist fire investigator on scene and they will work closely with police to assist with determining a cause of the fire.”
Bolton said there was no ongoing risk to the public and the fire had been extinguished.
